Movement Three — The Loosening

I.38Loosening Work

Ambition is not the grip. Wanting to build something well, to finish, to be good at a thing, none of that needs loosening. The grip is narrower and comes later: it is the requirement that the result arrive, on schedule, recognized, or else something in you will not be all right.

That requirement does not make the work better. It moves attention away from the work and onto the outcome, which is not present yet and cannot be touched, adjusted, or improved right now, only worried about. A hand clenched around next month has nothing left over for the sentence in front of it, the joint being cut, the number that will not balance.

Loosen the clench on the outcome and the effort does not slacken. It usually sharpens, because it has somewhere to go again. This is one of the easier tests in the whole practice to run honestly, because the difference shows up in the work itself, not only in how you feel about it.

Try it across one afternoon. Take a single task and, before starting, notice where the grip on its result is sitting, in the stomach, in a rehearsed sentence about how it will be received. Then work with attention on the task alone, and watch, at the end of the afternoon, what the work is like when it was not also carrying your need to be all right.
