Movement Three — The Loosening
I.40 — Loosening the Mirror
Picture a self-image as a pane of glass carried everywhere, at an angle, so that whoever is nearby can see the reflection it is meant to show them. It is heavy. It is fragile. It needs constant small adjustments of angle depending on who has just walked into the room, and a great deal of the day's attention goes into carrying it without a crack.
None of that carrying is the person. It is a reputation being managed in real time, a surface kept presentable, and it is worth noticing how much weight goes into a thing whose entire purpose is being looked at by others rather than being lived by you.
Set the glass down for an hour. Not smashed, not renounced, just set down, the way a heavy bag is set down at a doorway before going further inside. What is left standing there, unreflected, unangled, is the part of you that was underneath the exhibition the whole time, the one actually doing the walking, the working, the noticing.
This is not an instruction to erase yourself or to stop caring how you come across. The person carrying the glass remains exactly as before. What the hour tests is smaller and plainer: whether there is someone there when the glass is not being held up. Try the hour once and watch for what is left standing.
