Movement Four — The Tending

I.58Listening

Turn attention fully onto another person and something happens that is easy to underestimate. It is the first gift most tending has to offer, and it is the rarest one given. Most conversations are two people taking turns preparing their next sentence while the other one talks. That is not listening. It only wears the clothes of listening.

Real listening drops the rehearsal. The reply, if there is one, gets built after the other person has finished, not during. What is heard, once the rehearsal stops, is not only the words but the grip under them: the fear steering a complaint, the old wound behind a sharp tone, the wanting to be understood that sits under most of what anyone says twice. None of this requires cleverness. It requires the hand to stay open and stay still.

It is rare, across a whole life, to be fully attended to. Watch a face when it happens to someone, the small change when a person realizes no reply is coming yet, that they are simply being heard. This is tending in its plainest form, needing no undertaking recited and no special occasion. Try it in the next conversation. Say nothing back until the other person is truly finished.
