Movement Five — The Carrying

I.71Illness

The body will fail you, in small ways soon and larger ways later, and the practice does not stop when it does.

Illness is not a teacher sent to improve you. It is a body doing what bodies do, and any story that makes it a message is a grip on meaning where there is only fact. But a sick body is the plainest place to see that everything changes, because it will not let you look away.

So look. Pain has a location and an edge. Watch it without the story — without the fear about what it means, without the argument about whether it should be happening. The pain is not less. But the fist around it, the second suffering made of dread and refusal, can be seen and can loosen, and that one is often the larger of the two.

Test it in a minor illness, before a major one comes. A cold, a headache. Find the pain, then find the clench around the pain, and see whether they are the same size. When you can tell them apart in something small you will have a hand ready for something large.
