Movement Five — The Carrying

I.77What Stays

Nothing you can check goes on after the lamp. But this is not the same as nothing staying.

Look at what a life leaves that can be seen. A tree planted and grown. A path kept clear that others walk. A person who learned to open a hand because they once saw yours open. Work that outlasts its worker. A kindness that moved someone to a kindness. These are not stories about elsewhere. They are here, on this side, and they are the whole of what a life can reliably leave.

So the practice does not ask you to hope. It asks you to tend. Whatever stays, stays in others and in things, and both of those are within reach of a hand, today, in an ordinary hour. The question is not what happens to you afterward. It is what your hands are doing now that will still be doing something when they have stopped.

Write down three things that will outlast you and that you can touch. Then touch one of them this week. That is the entire teaching on what remains, and it needs nothing you cannot see.
