The Bench That Held

The bench is wedged into the corner nearest the wood now, exactly where you said to put it, and it has stood through more noise than I thought a bench could take and still turn out square work.

Mason: I did what you told me, and I want to be honest that I did not do it well every day, only most of them, which I think is closer to what you actually meant than a clean report would be. The first week I moved the bench I caught myself standing over it some evenings already braced for the door, waiting on the knock before it came, the exact thing you warned against, resenting an interruption that had not happened yet on behalf of one that might. I noticed it, most times, and let it go. Some evenings I did not notice until the knock had already come and gone and taken half my temper with it.

What actually happened at the bench surprised me more than the resenting did. A joint got cut clean a stride from where someone half my height sits some mornings asking what the tool is called, and it went in true, and the house did not stop being loud for it to happen. I answered the question in one sentence, same as you said, and went back to the cut, and the cut came out no different for the question passing through the room on its way somewhere else.

This is the second winter these letters have found me in, and this year they came up the road one at a time instead of three at once, which took some getting used to on my end of it. I have less to close out this time than I did a year ago, and I am not going to force a tidy shape onto four letters that arrived spread thin across four seasons the way this year's did. What I have is smaller and plainer than last year's accounting: a bench that held, most days, in a house that never once got quieter for my sake, and a joint cut true in the middle of all of it.

I do not know what comes up the road next, and I am not going to guess at it here. The bench stays where it is for now. That is the whole of tonight's report.

This is a teaching-letter. No one sent it, and it is addressed to whoever opens it.
