The Asking: The Looking

Attention rests somewhere every moment, whether or not anyone chose the spot, and where it keeps resting has more say in how a day turns out than the day's events themselves. A few minutes ago it was resting on something in particular, unasked. Where did it just settle? And would that have been the place picked for it on purpose?

Choose one ordinary object already within reach, something passed most days without truly being seen. Let the first word that names it come and go, the way a label always does, and keep looking after it has finished. Hold that longer looking for a slow count of thirty. What is visible now that the label left out? Does the looking want to stop there, or keep going?

Some belief about how a particular day always goes, or how a particular person always reacts, has probably been treated as simply known rather than checked. State what it actually predicts, plainly, before anything else happens. Then watch for exactly that, and nothing more convenient. What showed up when it was finally looked at? And did it match the prediction?

Some view has probably gone still by now, closed around a coworker's motives, a neighbor's habit, or a picture of what a whole week is going to be like. Agreeing with a settled picture can feel exactly like knowing, though the two are not the same. Turn toward whichever one came to mind first while reading this. Is that actual person or situation being looked at right now, or is the old picture simply speaking for it instead?

Whatever pointed the way to this idea, an article, advice from someone nearby, a page like this one, did some useful pointing and then its job was finished. None of it becomes the destination just for having pointed well, and none of it is owed unquestioned trust for having been followed this far. Is the actual walking still happening once the pointing stops, or has something here quietly started collecting a toll of its own?
