Movement Two — The Looking
I.17 — The Instrument
Attention is the one tool everything else depends on. Not thought, not willpower, not belief, but attention itself: where the mind actually rests, moment to moment, whether or not it was chosen. A life takes its shape less from what happens to it than from where its attention has been spent.
Picture a house at night and a single lamp carried from room to room. The rooms not yet lit still exist. The table is there, the door is there, the cold cup on the sill is there, but until the lamp arrives none of it is seen, and what is not seen is not worked with. This is the shape of an untended life: rooms full of ordinary furniture nobody has looked at in years.
It is easy to assume the lamp is fixed, carried by habit into whichever room is loudest. It is not fixed. It can be lifted on purpose. It can be held steady on one thing longer than a flinch. It can be brought back, gently, from wherever it wandered off to.
That last part is the whole of what follows here. The instrument can be trained. Not perfected, not owned outright, only trained, the way a hand learns a task it did not know at first. Before the training starts, try one thing. Notice where the lamp is right now, this second, as you read, not where it should be. That noticing is the first lift.
