Movement Two — The Looking

I.28Looking at Fear

Fear is mostly forecast. It tells a story about a moment that has not happened yet, the fall, the failure, the answer that does not come, and tells it with such detail that the body reacts to the story as though the moment were already here.

Attention, brought back to what is actually present, usually finds the feared thing is not there. Not gone forever, not disproven, simply not present in this instant, in this room, in this body sitting or standing exactly where it is. The forecast is happening in the mind. The moment happening everywhere else is, for now, only this one, ordinary and mostly fine.

This is not a claim that fears are false. Some are accurate forecasts of things worth taking seriously, and looking does not pretend otherwise. What looking does is sort the forecast from the fact, so a real danger can be met as itself instead of buried under a hundred imagined ones, and an unreal one can be seen clearly enough to lose its grip.

Try it the next time a small fear rises. Ask what is actually present right now, in the body, in the room, apart from the story being told. Often the honest answer is that nothing is happening yet. That answer is worth having.
