The Quiet Box in Winter

You wrote that the hive has gone silent and that the not knowing is worse than either answer would be, worse than dead and worse than only sleeping, because at least an answer would let you stop turning it over at two in the morning. I know that turning. It has kept me up more winters than I want to count.

Here is the plain trouble with the silence, worth saying once, clearly. Winter bees cluster tight and quiet on purpose, wrapped around a queen at the center of the box, burning just enough to hold warmth and no more, and a thriving cluster in deep cold can sound like nothing at all from outside a closed lid. Silence is not evidence. It only feels like evidence because a mind given nothing to work with will build a whole story out of the gap and then react to the story as though it had already been told the ending.

Do not lift the lid to settle it. Cold air dropped into a tight winter cluster can undo in one careless minute what the bees spent since autumn arranging, and the question you were trying to answer is not worth that risk. There is a gentler way to ask it. Rest your ear against the side of the box on a still day and knock once, low, with a bare knuckle. A living cluster answers with a short rise in the hum, a small stir moving through the mass and settling again. Nothing answers a box that has already gone quiet for good. Either way you will know something truer than you knew standing three feet back and guessing.

But some days even the knock tells you nothing certain, and that is the part with no shortcut through it. Sit with the box not knowing, the way you would sit out a delay with no schedule posted anywhere. The bees are not waiting on your certainty to keep doing whatever they are doing in there. Only you are. Give it the season it needs and check again on a warmer day, not because waiting fixes anything on its own, but because there was never a faster route to the true answer than the one the cold is already running.
