Movement Two — The Looking

I.31What Looking Is Not

Looking is not analysis. It is not narration. It is not fixing. All three feel like looking, closely enough to pass for it most days, and all three are something else wearing looking's clothes.

Analysis takes a thing apart and explains it, useful elsewhere, but explaining is not the same act as seeing, and can happen with the eyes effectively closed. Narration is the quieter habit: a voice inside describing what is happening while it happens, here is the breath, here it goes out, here is the pause, running alongside the actual breath like a commentator at a match who has never once touched the ball. Fixing arrives fastest of all, deciding what should be different before what is has been fully seen.

Watching the breath is not thinking about breathing. It is not even naming it. It is being with it directly, the way a hand rests on a rail rather than describing the rail to itself.

Notice, gently, how quickly the commentary starts up during any sitting, often within a few breaths. This is not a failure either (see I.19). It is simply worth catching. When it starts, let the describing voice go quiet, and return once to the plain, undescribed thing itself.
