Movement Two — The Looking
I.32 — Quiet
A field left fallow for a season is not being wasted. It is recovering, quietly, in a way that plowing it again immediately would not allow. Attention works the same way, and it is rarely given a season, or even an afternoon.
Most days are filled edge to edge: a task, then input, then another task, then more input, with barely a gap where nothing is being asked of the mind at all. Even rest, for many people, means a different kind of filling, a screen instead of a meeting, noise instead of silence, but rarely nothing. The instrument doing all the looking described across this movement is, itself, almost never given a stretch of actual quiet in which to recover.
An unfilled interval, once a day, does something a filled one cannot. No task, no input, nothing arriving to be attended to, only a room, or a walk, or a chair, and the mind allowed to settle on its own terms without being handed a job.
Try it for ten minutes today. No screen, no book, no task waiting at the other end. Notice what the mind does with the space, and notice, honestly, how rare that space had become before this.
