Movement Three — The Loosening

I.36The Open Hand

Make a fist around a stone. Hold it. Within a minute the hand is working, not to hold the stone, which weighs almost nothing, but to hold itself closed. The ache that follows is not from the stone. It is from the fist.

Now open the hand. Let the stone sit flat on the palm, held only by the shape of the palm and the fact of not turning it over. The stone has not gotten lighter. The arm still has to bear its weight. But the hand is no longer fighting itself to keep something that was never trying to leave, and it can stay like this far longer than the fist could.

This is the difference the whole practice is built around, worth feeling once with an actual object before it is tried on anything harder. The fist and the palm can hold the identical weight. One tires in minutes. The other can hold, rest, and still be offered, turned toward another hand, another need, without first having to be forced open.

An open hand can carry a life's worth of people, work, and losses, because it is not spending half its strength defending against the loss of them. That is the shape this practice is trying to give a life. Try it with a stone before trying it with anything that matters more.
