Movement One — The Grip
I.5 — The Closed Hand
Make a fist now, and hold it while you read this.
Notice what the fist costs. The forearm tightens. The fingers go pale. Within a minute the hand wants to open and you are spending something to keep it shut. Notice also what a fist cannot do: it cannot receive, cannot feel the shape of anything, cannot be offered.
This is the whole teaching in a hand. What the body does with a fist, the mind does with a person, an outcome, an opinion, a picture of itself. The grip feels like strength and is mostly cost. It feels like keeping and is mostly not-seeing, because a closed hand has no palm to know a thing with.
Now open it. Feel the blood return. Nothing has been dropped. The hand is still there, still yours, still able to hold — only now it holds the way a hand is made to, and can let go when the time comes.
You will forget this within the hour and clench again. That is expected. The fist is not a fault. It is simply what a hand does when it forgets it has a choice. The rest of these pages is about remembering.
