Movement Three — The Loosening

I.49The Hand Extended

A hand busy holding itself closed has nothing left over to offer anyone. This is not a failing, just a fact of hands: a fist cannot also be a handshake, a fist cannot carry someone else's weight for a while, a fist is fully occupied being a fist.

Everything in this movement has been about that occupation, finding it in love, work, opinion, the mirror, fear, the past, the future, grief, pleasure, and watching it loosen, again and again, without ever arriving anywhere final. What was not yet said is what the loosening makes room for once the hand is not so busy.

It turns outward. Attention that is no longer spent defending an image, rehearsing a fear, or clenching around an old wound becomes available for whoever happens to be standing nearby: a task they need help with, a trouble of their own, a plain fact about them that was there to be seen all along, if there had been anything left to see it with. Watch for it once today: the moment, just after a grip eases, when someone nearby comes into view who was not there a minute before.

That is the country the next movement opens into, not the self and its grips anymore, but the people around it, and what an open hand owes them, and how care is practiced rather than merely felt. The hand that has been the subject of this whole movement does not stay closed around itself. It turns, palm up, toward whoever is next.
