Movement Four — The Tending
I.50 — The Reach of the Hand
A closed hand does not stay in one place. Close it around an opinion, a person, an outcome, and the clench does not stop at your own skin. It reaches into the room: the friend who softens a voice around your temper, the conversation that bends to avoid a nerve nobody wants touched. No one watches a grip and stays outside it.
This is why the practice that began with your own attention (see I.17) cannot stop there. What was found in stillness, a grip forming, a grip seen, a grip loosening, was never a private event. It only looked private because the looking started at home.
Tending is not a new discipline stacked on top of looking and loosening. It is the same discipline, carried further out. The hand that learned to open around your own wanting can be watched doing the same work around someone else's.
Try it once. Notice a grip today, and notice who else's life it is resting on. A wound made from carelessness lands on a face. A gift given openly is felt as open. None of this needs a new name. It only needs the looking you already have, walked out the door.
