I.52 — The Second Undertaking

I undertake to take only what is given.

Taking is a grip closing around something still in another hand. Sometimes the thing is an object. More often it is smaller and harder to name: credit for work not fully yours, an hour of someone's time spent without asking, the attention of a room pulled toward you by force rather than offered. None of this shows up on a ledger. A ledger tracks amounts. This undertaking tracks the hand.

Here is a test that needs no witness but you. A gift received openly and a thing taken feel different from the inside, even when the two hands end up holding the exact same object. A gift arrives with room in it. A taking arrives with a small tightness, a private argument already prepared in case anyone asks. Notice that tightness the next time it appears. It is the whole undertaking, in one sensation.

This is not a question of ownership, which is a matter for elsewhere. It is a question about the moment before the hand closes: was it offered, or was it reached for while the other hand looked away. The practice is to keep checking, every time, which one just happened.
