Movement One — The Grip
I.6 — What Is Held
Not everything gripped is a thing. Look for the grips and you will find them around objects, yes, but more often around people, around outcomes, around opinions, and most of all around the picture of who you are.
Walk the list slowly. A person whose staying you need. A result that must arrive for you to be all right. A view you would rather defend than examine. A self you would rather perform than see. Each is a closed hand, and each costs what a fist costs — attention, breadth, the warmth of a palm.
The list is not an accusation. Every person carries these, and a life without any would be a life without love or aim. The point of looking is not to be rid of holding. It is to know where the hands are, so that the clench can be seen when it comes.
Write four things down, one of each kind. Do not fix anything. Simply know that these are where you grip, and that knowing where already changes the hand a little.
