Movement Four — The Tending
I.63 — Honesty's Edge
Honesty has an edge, and the edge cuts differently depending on how the hand holds it. Truth carried open arrives as something offered, weighed first for what it will do to the person receiving it, timed for when it can actually be used. Truth thrown arrives as a blade, and the fact that it happens to be accurate does not blunt it. Accuracy was never the same thing as care.
There is a familiar sentence that gives the game away every time it is said. I was only being honest, offered right after something landed hard, as if the label honest were a permit that excused the throw. It is a fist with a name tag on it. The honesty was often real. So was the fist.
The test does not live in the words themselves, since the same sentence can be either edge depending on how it travels. It lives in the reach of the hand: what the truth actually did when it landed, and whether it was carried there open, at the other person's pace, or thrown, at the speed that felt best to the one holding it. Before the next hard truth leaves you, check the hand it is riding on. Carried, or thrown. That is the whole test.
