I.54 — The Fourth Undertaking

I undertake to speak what is true and useful, and not to tighten another person's grip.

Speech is the hand at its longest reach. A hand touches what is near. A sentence can touch someone on the other side of a country, or land on someone years from now who only ever hears it secondhand. Because the reach is so long, the care has to match it.

Two words carry the whole undertaking, and neither alone is enough. True is not enough by itself: a fact can be handed over like a blade, edge first, meant to cut. Flattery is often true and still tightens a grip, feeding a wanting that did not need feeding. Cruelty dressed as honesty is often true and still a fist, thrown with a label on it. The deliberate provocation, words picked because they will inflame rather than inform, can be accurate and still fail the undertaking, because truth was never the whole test. Useful is the other half. Does this loosen something, or does it hand someone a tighter grip to hold.

Before speaking, there is time for one check: is this true, and is this useful. Speak only when both are honestly yes.
