Movement Five — The Carrying

I.79The First Morning

There is no accumulation here. You do not become someone who has done the practice. Every morning you are someone who is about to.

This is a relief once it is seen. A person who has done the practice owns something and must defend it, and there is the fist again, closed on an attainment. A person about to begin owns nothing and can look. The tenth year is the first morning. So is the ten-thousandth.

Test it against your own sense of progress. Notice the moment you think you have this now. Feel what the thinking does to the hand. It closes a little, on the having. And the next grip walks in past it unseen, because a hand that has arrived has stopped looking for the road.

So begin again each day, on purpose, as if none of it were known. The breath found for the first time. The friction located as if new. The hand discovered to have a choice. Not because you have forgotten, but because remembering is a grip and beginning is not, and the practice was always the open one.
