Movement Five — The Carrying

I.66Morning

The day begins before you choose anything about it. The body wakes, and within a few breaths the hands have already started closing — on the list, on the dread of one meeting, on the picture of who must be performed today.

So the practice begins there, in the first minutes, before the closing is complete. Sit, briefly. Find the breath. Let the day arrive as weather rather than as verdict. This is not a ritual and needs no candle. It is the hand opening once, deliberately, before the day teaches it to clench.

Then, before rising, name one thing you are likely to grip today. Not to prevent it. Only so that when the clench comes you will recognize it, the way you recognize a face.

The whole of the teaching fits inside a morning if it has to. The looking, the loosening, the hand carried open into rooms with other people in it. Try it for a week — ten minutes, the same minutes each day — and watch whether the day arrives differently. If it does not, you have lost seventy minutes. If it does, you have found where the practice lives.
