Movement One — The Grip
I.15 — Not a Fault
Gripping is not a disease and you are not a patient. It is what a hand does when it forgets that it can open. Every person alive does it, all day, and a teaching that treated this as a sickness would only hand you one more thing to clench around: the picture of yourself as someone who fails.
So there is no guilt in these pages, and none is expected of you. A closed hand seen is simply a closed hand seen. It does not need a confession. It needs only the seeing, and then, when the time comes, the opening, and if it closes again an hour later that is not a return to wrongdoing but a hand being a hand.
Test this against your own habit of self-blame. Notice, next time a grip is seen, whether a second grip forms at once — a tightness about having gripped. That second one is the one that most teachings add and this one asks you to leave. The first clench costs something. The clench about the clench costs twice, and buys nothing.
You are not being corrected. You are being shown a hand.
