Movement One — The Grip

I.16The Turn

You cannot pry a grip open with another grip.

This is where most effort fails. The clench is seen, and at once a second hand arrives to force the first one open — a resolution, a rule, a hard decision to stop caring. The second hand is only more tightness. Two fists, where there was one. Test it against your last resolution: did it open the grip, or only sit on top of it.

What opens a hand is not force. It is being seen. The fingers, when they are looked at plainly and for long enough, remember on their own that they can move. This is not a promise about the whole of your life. It is a claim about a single grip and a single looking, and it is the claim the next part of this book exists to give you the tools to test.

So the turn is this. You have found the friction. You have traced it to a holding-on. You have seen what the holding costs and that it is not your fault. Now put down the wish to fix it, which is only another closed hand, and pick up the one thing that opens anything.

It is attention. The next pages are about how to hold it, which is the last thing you will ever need to hold tightly.
