Movement Two — The Looking

I.33The Lamp Carried

The lamp from the opening of this movement (see I.17) was never meant to stay in one room. Everything since, the sitting, the wandering brought home, one thing held steady, the wanting and the anger and the fear looked at directly, has been training it to travel.

And it does travel, once trained a little. Into a queue at a counter, restless and ordinary. Into a conversation that has started to sharpen. Into the few seconds before a hard sentence gets said out loud. The lamp goes where it is carried, and by now it can be carried almost anywhere, held on almost anything, for at least a few steady breaths.

Something else becomes noticeable along the way, unannounced, not asked for. A thing looked at fully, really looked at, without flinching and without commentary, does not simply sit there examined. It begins, on its own, to loosen. A grip seen clearly is already a little less closed than it was, the way a fist held under a steady enough light starts, almost against its own habit, to ease at the fingers.

Check this once before going on. Carry the lamp to one small grip today and hold it there, only looking, and see whether anything in the fingers moves.

That loosening is not this movement's subject. It is the next one, and it is arriving whether named yet or not. The lamp is lit and carried, and already the next room is opening its door.
