Movement Four — The Tending
I.55 — The Fifth Undertaking
I undertake to guard the instrument.
Every undertaking so far depends on the same thing: a hand that can see what it is doing. Attention is that instrument. It notices the avoidable wound before it lands, feels the tightness of a taking, stays awake inside a want, checks a sentence for truth and use before it leaves the mouth. Nothing else in this practice works without it. So the fifth undertaking is not one more rule beside the others. It is the rule that protects the others' tools.
Some things cloud the instrument on purpose, or as a side effect of what they were built to do. Intoxication has always done this, dulling the very faculty the rest of the practice trains. It is not the only clouding, and in an ordinary life today it may not even be the main one. The things built to farm attention, designed to feed rage and craving because rage and craving hold a person longer than calm does, do the same work more quietly, more often, with better engineering behind them.
This is not abstinence handed down as law. It is care, practiced daily: noticing what leaves the instrument sharper, and what leaves it dull, and choosing with that in view.
