I.56 — Undertaking, Not Law

Five Undertakings, and notice what is missing. No enforcer stands behind them. No tally keeps count of the days they held and the days they broke. No confession is required before they can be picked back up. They were never a law in that sense, and calling them one would misname the whole practice.

An undertaking is renewed, not enforced. Say it again tomorrow morning the way it was said this morning: I undertake. Not I have kept, not I promise this time for certain. Renewal is built for the fact that a grip sometimes wins anyway: a wound made carelessly, a thing taken without asking, wanting in the driver's seat for an afternoon. When that happens, the failure is not a debt now owed. It is a grip, exactly like any other grip this book has been pointing at. It can be seen, it can be loosened, and the undertaking can be renewed on the far side of it.

A ceremony of guilt would only be another clench, this time around the failure itself, and a hand can only open one thing at a time. There is no need for it. See what happened, let the seeing loosen it, and start again.
