Movement Five — The Carrying

I.67Ordinary Days

No special conditions are needed. This is the most easily forgotten thing in the book.

The practice does not wait for a quiet house, a retreat, a better year. It happens on a weekday, between a message and a spilled cup, in the body you have with the sleep you got. The ordinary day is not the obstacle to the practice. It is the whole of the field.

Look at where the grips actually close. Not on mountaintops. In the kitchen, at the desk, in the second before a reply is sent. That is where the seeing is needed, so that is where the seeing is done. A practice that works only in stillness has been tested only in stillness, and that is not a test.

Take one ordinary task today — dishes, a form, a walk to somewhere dull — and carry attention through it as if it mattered, because it is where you live. Notice how often the mind treats the task as a corridor to some better moment. The corridor is the day. There is not another one.
